This policy covers the Golf Cappie apps for iPhone and Android, the web app at golfcappie.app, and this site, golfcappie.com (together, "Golf Cappie"). Golf Cappie is made by CrowdQuell Inc. ("we", "us"). Using Golf Cappie also means agreeing to our Terms of Service.
The short version: we collect what Golf Cappie needs to work, such as your account, your rounds and where you are on the course. We don't sell your information, we don't show ads, and we don't use advertising or analytics trackers.
What we collect
Your account. Your email address, your name, how you sign in (email and password, Google or Apple) and an account ID. If you sign in with Apple and hide your email, we get Apple's relay address instead of yours. Passwords are handled by Google's Firebase Authentication, and we never see them.
Your profile and settings. Your display name, the handicap you enter, your home course, and preferences such as yards or metres.
Your rounds. The course and tees, your scores and stats (fairways, greens, putts and so on), and, if you track shots, where each shot was hit from, the club and the time. Your golf bag: the clubs, their makes and models, and how far you hit them.
Your location. With your permission, the app uses your phone's precise location while it's open: during a round, for distances and shot tracking, and when you search for courses near you. When you search for courses, our server notes how far you are from each course found (the distance, not your position) for two hours, so that you can download one you're at; for each course you download it keeps the distance at that time. Golf Cappie doesn't track you in the background. You can turn location off in your phone's settings, though distances won't work without it.
Your devices. For each phone or tablet you sign in on: an app installation ID, a push notification token, the operating system and its version, the model, and which permissions you've allowed. This lets your rounds sync and notifications reach you.
Rounds you share. If you share a round, we create a link to it. Anyone with the link can see that round's course, date, scores, stats and shot map, until you stop sharing it or delete it.
Signups on golfcappie.com. For the beta and the launch email: your email address, your country (and state, in the United States), and for the beta your phone type, handicap range, how often you play and the watch you wear, if you tell us.
Courses you download. Which courses you've downloaded, when, and how many times, so a course you've had downloads again on a new phone and the beta's course limits work.
Technical information. When the apps or sites talk to our servers, our hosting provider records the request, including your network (IP) address, the time and your browser or app version. Our server's own logs record each request with your account ID, the app's platform and version, and the result. We keep these logs for 30 days and use them to keep Golf Cappie running and secure.
Crash reports. If the app crashes, it sends a crash report: what the app was doing when it crashed (the stack trace), the app version, and your phone's model and operating system version. Crash reports don't include your account, name or email.
The web app keeps you signed in using your browser's storage. Neither the web app nor this site sets advertising or tracking cookies.
What we use it for
- Running Golf Cappie: distances, plays-like numbers, weather, scoring, stats and syncing your rounds between your devices.
- Your account: signing you in, account emails such as verification and password resets, and notifications you allow.
- Support, and answering you when you write to us.
- Keeping Golf Cappie secure, preventing abuse and enforcing our Terms.
- Improving Golf Cappie, using information that doesn't identify you.
- For signups: choosing beta testers, sending invites and the launch email.
We don't sell your personal information, share it for advertising, or use it to build an advertising profile of you.
Who else handles it
We use other companies to provide parts of Golf Cappie. Each gets only what its part needs.
- Google Cloud and Firebase host our servers and database (in the United States), handle sign-in, and deliver notifications. Firebase Crashlytics receives the apps' crash reports.
- Google and Apple sign-in, if you use them, tell us your name and email.
- Golf Intelligence provides course maps and data. Our server asks it for the courses you search for and download, with your location when you search near you, but nothing that identifies you.
- Maps: Google Maps on Android and the web, and Apple Maps on iPhone, show satellite imagery. They receive the areas being viewed. Use of Google Maps is also subject to the Google Maps Terms and the Google Privacy Policy.
- WeatherAPI.com provides weather, and GPXZ and Japan's Geospatial Information Authority provide elevation. Our server asks them for a course's location, without anything that identifies you.
- OpenGolfAPI: when you share a round, our server asks it for the course's par by the course's name and location.
- Cloudflare Turnstile checks that golfcappie.com's forms and signing in on the web app are done by a person. It looks at your browser and network address.
- Google Play Integrity and Apple App Attest (through Firebase App Check) confirm to our server that it's talking to the genuine Golf Cappie app on a genuine device. They look at your device and the app, not your Golf Cappie data.
- Apple and Google handle purchases made through their stores, and TestFlight or Google Play testing if we invite you to the beta.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it, to protect people's safety or our rights, or as part of a sale or merger of our business, in which case this policy would continue to apply to it.
How long we keep it
- Your account, profile, rounds, bag and devices: until you delete your account.
- Server request records: up to 30 days.
- Signups: until Golf Cappie launches and the beta ends, or until you ask us to remove them.
When you delete your account, we delete your account and everything stored with it from our servers and from Firebase, and your share links stop working. Backup copies are kept for a limited time and then overwritten. We may keep information that doesn't identify you.
Your choices and rights
- See and change your profile, rounds and settings in the app.
- Delete your account in the app under Settings, Account, Delete account, or on the web app. You can also email us. How to delete your account
- Location and notifications can be turned off in your phone's settings at any time.
- Ask us for a copy of your information, to correct it, or to delete it, by emailing support@crowdquell.com.
Depending on where you live, such as the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or California, you may have further rights, including to object to or restrict how we use your information and to complain to your data protection authority. We'll respond to requests as the law where you live requires, and we won't treat you differently for making one. Where the law asks for a legal basis, we rely on providing the service you asked for, our legitimate interests in running and securing it, and your consent for location and notifications.
Children
Golf Cappie isn't for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. If you think a child under 13 has given us information, email us and we'll delete it.
Where your information is kept
Golf Cappie's servers are in the United States. If you use it from elsewhere, your information is transferred there and handled as this policy describes.
Security
Information travels encrypted between your device and our servers, and access to it is limited to the people and services that need it. No system is perfectly secure, so please keep your account secure too.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date above, and tell you in the app or by email if the change is significant.
